This is a superb achievement on John's part and demonstrates a wonderful commitment. John sat his viva voce examination in May along with two colleagues who were also trying to get through in the 30 months. They all faced the university's usual tough grilling and John's colleagues had to rework part of their dissertations, which went through in November. The university is very pleased with the standards of the three submissions received so far and with two more in the pipeline for graduation in November it augurs well for this, the first DBA Marketing group. News release published at the start of the programme in 1997 CIM’s Director of Education signs up for his DoctorateThe Director of Education at the Chartered Institute of Marketing leads the way and has signed up for the new Doctor in Business Administration (Marketing) degree which is awarded by the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. Norman Waite who oversees all education programmes at the CIM headquarters at Cookham in Berkshire as well as for 35,000 students world-wide is the first "student" to enrol for a new DBA in Marketing. The DBA is administered and organised through MDC Ltd who already run a well-established MBA in Strategic Marketing at the CIM headquarters. Senior marketing directors and managers who already have a Masters degree can enrol on the new DBA in Marketing and cap their careers with the top academic qualification. Many of the graduates who have completed the MBA have already enrolled on the DBA in Marketing. They will start their studies in mid March and work in the same way that has proved so successful at MBA level. Course members gather together every 6 weeks for an intensive weekend in which they must present to their peers and be prepared to defend the research and background work that they are doing. This "taught" part of the course, which holds the set together and avoids the high drop-out rate with a traditional PhD, lasts 18 months and is followed by 18 months work on a dissertation that must be of publishable standard. The specialist marketing elements of the DBA have been developed by Professor Geoff Lancaster, Chairman of MDC Ltd, and formerly visiting Professor at Lincoln University campus. He says: " The marketing modules sit alongside 6 heavily research orientated units that help course members develop their thinking so that it is at the forefront of marketing knowledge. The research modules are led by Lincoln University campus staff who work on other streams of the DBA too." The modules themselves are held at Moor Hall, headquarters of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and run from Friday evening to Sunday evening approximately every 6 weeks. This allows busy top executives to fit their studies and research work in around their normal work schedules. Most traditional PhD’s would require the researcher to give up any full time job for the duration of the degree (often 3 to 5 years). Norman Waite says, "I’m really looking forward to participating in this exciting new programme and to be involved in some worthwhile research work that will also benefit the Institute and it is particularly pleasing that the taught part of the programme is right here at the CIM’s International headquarters in Cookham." Aimed at senior marketing directors and managers who already have a Masters degree, it represents the pinnacle in academic achievement. Many of the graduates who have completed the MBA in Strategic Marketing over the past 6 years, have already enrolled on the DBA in Marketing. Soon this DBA in Marketing will be the qualification that top marketers aspire to"
